NOBUTA MAGIC（The Bank of Swiss/LiblaryRecords）

無尽（むじん）という文化は古くから地方に伝わる、最もミニマムでドメスティックな金融システム。発祥はわたしたちのいる山梨といわれている。商人たちが数人で会合を開く。それぞれ、その月毎に決められたお金を払う。持ち回りで、会に参加しているものがお金をもらっていく。というのがそもそもの習わしである。

Mujin: a mutual financing [loan] association. Mujin is known throughout the countryside for decades and it is said that it started here in Yamanashi. So what is Mujin? Basically, it's the most minimum and domestic way of a finance system. Shopkeepers hold a meeting once in a while where each person pays a session fee. The organizer of the meeting keeps the fee for its own shop and every meeting is held by a different person (shop).

今では趣味の合う仲間や同級生などでそれぞれ組織され、飲み会としての意味合いが強い。会費を決め、積み立てて旅行にいったり、昔ながらの風習で、月毎に現金総取りという会もあるようだ。そういった会の総称を山梨では無尽と呼ぶ。

These days instead of shopkeepers, the meeting is held by people who share same interests or between old classmates. They gather up and collect a session fee to go on trips or they just get together to drink.

さて、先日、この無尽文化の名前をとり、MUSICとZINEという言葉をかけ合わせたクラブパーティーの企画に携わった。今回はプレパーティということで、小規模でひっそりと行われたが、そもそものきっかけは、山梨出身、北杜市で美術館館長を務め、都内では東高円寺のレコードショップを経営する仲間を手伝いながら、DJ活動をするNOBUTA MAGICくんが甲府でパーティを開きたいと中村キース・へリング美術館の神田さんとともに甲府を訪れたことに端を発する。

The other day I held a club party called Mujin, based on MUSIC and ZINE. This was only a pre party so it was held small and quiet. The trigger of this event was NOBUTA MAGIC, the director of a museum in Hokuto, Yamanashi. He also DJ's and helps out a record shop in Tokyo. When he visited Kofu a while ago, he talked to Kanda (who works at Nakamura Keith Herring Museum), that he wanted to hold a DJ event in Kofu.

NOBUTAくんは生粋のヴァイナルジャンキー（レコードを愛してやまない人をこう呼ぶ）であり、ビートホリック（ハウスやテクノなど四つ打ちを始め、ビートを愛してやまない人をそう呼ぶ）である。スイス銀行というパーティを開催しアンダーグラウンドシーンを闊歩する。ベテランのアーティストとともにアメリカツアーに同行させてもらった経験もあるという。若いながらも、様々な経験を経て、すでに重鎮の貫禄すら漂っている。寒さも厳しい季節に川の中でDJをするなど感性もぶっ飛んでおり、彼が甲府でDJしたら面白そうだと思い、相談を引き受けた。

NOBUTA is vinyl junkie(someone (usually in the DJ community) who possess an obsession with records) and a beat-holic (who loves rhythmic unit in music). He's still young and has experienced a lot already. He has DJ'd in a freezing river during winter, went on a tour with veteran artists in the States, and has also held a party called "swiss bank".  He totally has a crazy mind. 

NOBUTAくんと音楽性の合いそうな甲府のDJの何人かにお声をかけさせてもらい、フライヤーも本人の手作り。経験のないNOBUTAくんがレイアウトして僕と神田さんで口を挟んで完成した。デザインされていない素人丸出しデザインが最高にユルい。だがそれがいい。

We invited a few more other DJ's that I thought wound fit to the concept of this event. The flier of the event was created by NOBUTA. He's not a designer or anything but the amateur design and layout is what made the poster creative.  

場所はNOBUTAくんとのフィーリングがマッチしたJUJU。雰囲気抜群で甲府にいながら異国間を味わえる空間だ。

JUJU is the place where the event was held. The club’s atmosphere and the concept matched perfectly. This club makes you feel like you're in a foreign country.

当日を迎え、オープンアップは僕と後輩の二人で活動するDJ ユニットOHACOが担当。その後のMItsuoさんNOBUTAくん、OTAさんと素晴らしいDJの連携でグルーブ感のあふれる音楽空間を演出した。なにより久しぶりにヴァイナルレコードでDJをする姿を拝むことができたのがよかった。過去10年ほど山梨のクラブカルチャーと関わってきたが、最近はPCDJ、CDやUSBでのDJが主流だ。レコード人気も再燃してはいるが、携帯性や拡張性を考えればアナログではなくデジタルでDJするほうが圧倒的に楽なのだ。これはベテランのDJであってもレコードの魅力を把握した上で、ニーズに対応しながらスタイルを選び使い分けているのである。どちらが間違いで正解ということもなく、好みに他ならない。

The opening DJ of the event was the OHACO (a DJ unit by my friend and I) . After that was Mitsuo and NOBUTA. I've been involved with Yamanashi's club culture for about 10years. Recent DJ's are usually played by PC's, CD's or USB's. Digital DJ's are simple and easy than analog record DJ's but veterans understand the goodness of records. They correspond with the needs and select their DJ by style. Neither way is good or bad, I believe it's based on your taste.

しかしDJにも、所作がある。ディスクジョッキーと呼ばれる由縁が、その所作にあるのだ。（ここでいうDJとはクラブでターンテーブルを使って音楽を提供する人を差す）

重量感のある（実際、超重い。よく先輩やゲストのレコードを運んだなあ）レコードボックスをターンテーブルと対になった棚にどかっと置く。選曲する際は、フロアに背を向けた状態で、1枚1枚、選んでいくのだが、この手際の良さがたまらなくかっこいい。瞬時にボックスからレコードを引き出し、ジャケを確認し手に取っていく。目をしかめ、首をかしげながら、これこれ、といった調子で選び出した1曲をターンテーブルに置く。1枚に何曲か入っているので大体の位置に針を置き、モニターヘッドフォンで確認。針で曲の頭出しをするときは慎重に、繊細な手つきで針をそっとレコードの溝に落とす。PC画面にBPMなどのデータも出ないし曲の波形も出ない。音感と記憶のみを頼りに今フロアでかかっている曲とピッチを合わせ、ミックスポイントを探っていく。ターンテーブルのフチをなぞり、早めたり遅めたり、熟練した感覚によってジャストなBPMを導きだし、慎重に音を重ね、スムースに次曲へ繋げる。この一連の動作によって、フロアにいるお客さんのステップは止まることはない。久々に、レコードでのDJプレイを目の当たりにし、過去、イベントを共にしてきた先輩たちの記憶が蘇った。やっぱり、レコードでDJする姿はかっこいい。

DJ is a performance. I'm talking about DISC JOCKEY; people who play music using a turn table at a place such as a club.  

"The DJ places his super heavy record box right behind the cabinet of the turn table. Facing back to the audience, pulling out a record one by one, tilting his head figuring out what to play next. When he finally finds it, he places the record on the turn table, puts the needle on the record and checks the music with his headphones. There are no computer screens, or signal waveform of the music to check the tune. The only way to check is by his pitch sense. By turning the turntable, he slows and fasten the music, figuring out the BPM and connects the music to the next music. The dance floor keeps going....."

It's been a while since I listened to a record DJ. It reminded me of the time when I used to go to events. I have to admit, record DJ's are damn cool. 

イベントによってはレコードを使ったイベントも開催されている。不定期ではあるが、この#muzineというイベントも新しい音楽との出会いとして機能すればいいなと思う。僕はDJでどうこうというよりも、音楽が好きだし、大きな音で踊るということは素晴らしいことだと思っているし、画期的なコミュニケーションツールだと思っている。デジタルネイティブ世代（わたしたちもそうなのかもしれないが）にぜひ体感してほしい。イベント自体がZINEとなってカルチャーを表現し伝達する場になることも密かに目論んでいる。というか本来あるべき音楽イベントの姿だと個人的には思う。消費されていく音楽の流行もまた重要であるし、好きな音楽をとことん掘り下げつつ、べーシックを知ることもまた然り。音楽とはかくも人生を豊かにしてくれるものである。

It's getting rare, but some events do use records for DJ. I believe that this event was a success! I hope that this #Muzine event would spread throughout and connects people. I'm not an expert in DJ but I do love music. Dancing to loud music is great and it's a way to communicate. Events such as #Muzine is a type of event that's needed. I want the digital native generation to experience this music culture. I'm secretly hoping that the events would be ZINE and become a way to express culture. Consuming the latest music is important and digging deep down to the music you love is as important as knowing the basic. Music is what makes life rich.

ちなみにどんなジャンルの音楽を聴くかと聞かれることがあるが非常に応えづらい。ジャンルでいうとヒップホップ、やトラップ、ダブステップなどのベースミュージックを主にテクノ、ハウス、ぶっちゃけなんでも聴く。ジャンルは細分化され続けているため、ひとくくりにはできない。ジャンルにこだわらず音楽は何でも聴く。今はサウンドクラウドもあるから、国も問わず新鮮な音楽を聴き、情報を得る事ができる。このウェブサイトのKIKUというコンテンツでも、普段聴いている音楽やアーティストのリンクを載せているので見てみてほしい。少しでもそこから広がって、いい音楽と出会えたとしたら幸いである。

By the way, it's hard to answer the question, "What kind of music do you listen to?". Based on genera, I listen to music such as hiphop, trap, and dove stick. Mainly base music like techno and house. Those are my favorites but I listen to almost any kind of music. It's hard to enclose the genera since it's constantly divided into smaller genera's. I usually use sound cloud to listen to music. I also have my music list up on this website in the KIKU section. I hope by checking out KIKU, you can come upon new music.
